If i have been ordered a week off from my doctor. can my employer call my doc and ask what my symptoms are?

this was done behind my back. my doctor called me and told me they did this.If i have been ordered a week off from my doctor. can my employer call my doc and ask what my symptoms are?
They can call and ask, but based on HIPPAA laws the doc cannot give out the info. They can require a note from your doctor stating that you are unable to perform your job and stating any future restrictions (i.e when can you return...light duty vs full duty), but you'd need to consent to him sending the note. If your doc gave out the info then he broke the law.
they can and they do but they need your permission.
Your doctor can not give out your medical information, without your permission. Your boss can call and ask all he wants, but he won't get an answer. But, he can call to verify that you are under that doctor's care.
Kudos to your doc for giving you the heads up.
No medical info can be given out- that includes symptoms. They could probably call and verify that the letter you gave them was a real letter from that doctor that you did need this time off work though.
No, right to privacy act. If he does he's in trouble,if doctor gives out info then he's in trouble.
not without your permission, and don't worry about your Doctor giving them any info., by law, Doctors can't give out any pertinent medical information to anyone w/o your written consent. have you heard of HIPAA? that's the law that protects you.
Your boss can call your doctor and ask about your symptoms; but your doctor cannot give out any information without your permission due to patient confidentiality (HIPAA laws). Your doc would be in big trouble if he does.
